An Introduction to Moroccan Arabic
Moroccan Arabic, or Darija, is the language of everyday life in Morocco. It shares its foundations with Arabic, but has developed its own vocabulary, sounds, structures, and rhythms, shaped over time by Classical Arabic, Amazigh, French, and other linguistic influences. It is the language used in everyday conversation, from informal exchanges to shopping, work, social life, and daily interactions.
Modern Standard Arabic and Darija serve different purposes. Modern Standard Arabic is the language of formal writing, media, education, and public communication. Darija is primarily spoken and is the language you will hear in everyday interactions throughout Morocco. For students living, working, or spending significant time in Morocco, learning Darija provides direct access to these everyday exchanges.
We teach Darija as a spoken language, with communication at the center of the course. Students begin speaking from the first lessons, while grammar and vocabulary are introduced as tools for communicating more effectively. The goal is not to study Darija as an abstract system, but to develop the language skills needed to use it naturally in real situations.
How we teach Darija
Speaking first
Every lesson is built around communication. You start speaking from the first week, with vocabulary and structures introduced through use. Grammar supports communication rather than being taught as separate lessons.
Both scripts
Darija is taught in Arabic script alongside Latin transcription. If you already read Arabic, you develop that skill further. If you do not, transcription lets you start speaking immediately while gradually becoming familiar with the Arabic script.
Real materials
We combine the Peace Corps Moroccan Arabic materials with our own teaching resources. Lessons draw on authentic recordings, dialogues, and situations from everyday Moroccan life, giving students exposure to Darija as it is actually spoken.
Experienced teachers
Our Darija teachers are native speakers and trained language teachers. They also work with our MSA program, giving them a clear understanding of both varieties and how to help students navigate between spoken Moroccan Arabic and formal Arabic.
From Foundations to Fluency
Darija does not have a single official proficiency framework, so we do not reduce progress to a fixed number of hours or an invented scale. Instead, each level is defined by what you can understand and communicate.
Beginner
Foundations for everyday communication
Build the essential vocabulary and structures needed for daily interaction. Introductions, questions, requests, numbers, time, directions, shopping, ordering, and other common situations form the basis of the course. From the beginning, you work on understanding and producing simple spoken Darija.
Intermediate
Developing conversation
Move beyond short exchanges and begin communicating with greater independence. Talk about past experiences, plans, opinions, and everyday topics. Understand more natural speech, respond without relying on prepared phrases, and sustain conversations with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Advanced
Nuance, fluency, and register
Develop the ability to follow and participate in more complex, spontaneous conversation. Work with storytelling, humor, argumentation, and different registers of speech. You learn to adapt your language to different people and situations, while becoming more comfortable with the variation and regional features of Moroccan Arabic.
Your starting level is determined through a placement conversation, regardless of the course you book.
Who Learns Darija
People living in Morocco
For people living and working in Morocco, Darija is the language of everyday interaction. You do not need prior knowledge of Arabic script or linguistics. The course starts with the language you are most likely to encounter in daily life and builds the vocabulary, structures, and expressions you need to communicate with people around you.
Moroccans of the World
Many students with Moroccan family backgrounds already have some familiarity with Darija. You may understand much more than you can say, speak comfortably but struggle with certain situations, or have developed your Darija mainly through listening at home. Rather than placing you in a standard beginner course, we assess what you can actually understand and produce, then build from that starting point. The course focuses on developing the areas you need most, without going back to material you already know.
Students of Modern Standard Arabic
Students studying Modern Standard Arabic often discover that the Arabic they encounter in formal contexts differs from the language used in everyday conversation. Adding Darija gives you the opportunity to develop spoken Moroccan Arabic alongside your MSA studies and to use both varieties according to context.

قطرة بقطرة كيحمل الواد: drop by drop, the river fills. You pick up a phrase in conversation, a new expression from your teacher, a word you hear in the street, and gradually these pieces begin to connect. With time, what first felt unfamiliar becomes part of your everyday speech.
Darija is more than a practical language. It carries Moroccan ways of speaking, joking, telling stories, and expressing ideas. Proverbs, expressions, humor, and the poetry of zajal all give the language a character that cannot be separated from the culture in which it is spoken.
Learning Darija, then, is not only about being understood. It is also about becoming familiar with another way of speaking and seeing the world, chwya b chwya, one step at a time.
Placement, assessment and certificate
Placement is based on a short oral conversation, held online before you arrive or on your first day. We use it to understand what you can actually understand and say in Darija and to place you at the appropriate level. For heritage speakers especially, this conversation allows us to account for uneven profiles and existing language knowledge.
Assessment is continuous and practical. Throughout the course, teachers evaluate how well you can understand and communicate at your level, with an end-of-course oral assessment rather than a written exam. Darija is a spoken language, so we assess it through speaking and listening.
You receive a certificate stating the course taken, the number of hours completed, and the level reached. If your university or institution requires specific documentation for academic credit, contact us and we will discuss what we can provide.

The combined track: MSA + Darija
Modern Standard Arabic and Darija serve different purposes, but learning them together allows you to develop both sides of Arabic in parallel: the formal language used in writing and academic contexts, and the spoken language used in everyday life in Morocco.
Combined Track — 30 lessons a week
Study MSA Intensive in the morning (20 lessons) and Darija Semi-Intensive in the afternoon (10 lessons). Each course has its own placement and level, while the two schedules are coordinated into one program. The Darija component is a full language course, with its own progression, materials, and assessment.
The combined track is available for the same durations as the individual courses and is priced as the sum of the two programs.
For a lighter workload, MSA students can also add two Darija afternoons per week (4 lessons), providing regular exposure to spoken Moroccan Arabic alongside their MSA studies.
